How to Find a Specific Article
1. First, check if we have the article full-text online.
1. Search A to Z for the journal title. Click here for help in reading a citation and finding the journal
title:
Parts of a Citation.pdf
- Type the journal title in the box at the top of the page.
- If it is not found, proceed to step 2 below. If it is found, the databases which contain that journal will be listed underneath, with dates of the volumes which are available in full-text in that database (dates of coverage).
- Check the date of your article against the dates of coverage for the database(s).
- If the dates of coverage include the date of your article, click the title of the database.
- Depending on the database, you will see
1) a list of the available issues of the journal.
Click on the appropriate link to see the contents of that issue, and find your article.
Click the link for full-text under the article.
OR
2) The search page of the database.
Type in the title of the article, in quotation marks, and select Title, citation or equivalent, and search. If needed, type in the name of the journal also, and select Source, journal name, publication title or equivalent.
2. If we do not own the article in electronic full-text, check the Online Catalog for the print journal.
- Click on Online Catalog on the left, under Quick Links
- Type the journal name into the Find This box, and select Journal Title Keyword in the Find Results In: box. Click Search.
- If the journal is found, check the dates listed at the bottom of the page. A dash following a date (1938 - ) = "to the present"
note: if your search finds two journals with similar names, click on the title of the correct one, to see our holdings dates.
- If we have the journal for the date you need, write down the complete call number (for example: RT120.I5 A15).
- If the volume/issue you need is dated from 1994 to the present, it will be shelved on the Main Floor of the Library in the Periodicals Section.
- If the volume/issue you need is before 1994, and the call number is within this range: A to QD, it will be shelved in the basement, in call number order.
- If the call number is within this range: QD - Z, it will be shelved upstairs; ask a librarian for assistance. (We are in the process of moving all journals dated before 1994 to the basement; as of Feb. 20, 2008 everything up through call numbers beginning with QDs have been moved.)
3. If we do not own the article electronically or in print, you can request it from another library.
