Library of Congress (LC) System Subject Headings

Most of the books in Forsyth Library are organized by the Library of Congress system, which means they are grouped by subject. Call numbers--the letters and numbers on the spine of a book that tell you where to find it-- usually contain four lines.

Here is a sample catalog entry:

“Who Let the Dogs In? Incredible Political Animals I Have Known” by Molly Ivins

Location:  General Collection     Call Number:  E885.I995 2004        Status:  Available

What the Call Number means:

                 E         Broad Subject: American History
885      Narrow Subject: Political Satire, American
I995     Author’s initial plus numbers for first few letters of name
2004    Year the book was published

First, go to the Location where the book is shelved--in this case, the General Collection on the 2nd floor.  Start by finding the letter or letters at the beginning of the call number.  (In this case, "E").  The shelves have labels on each end, and run from the As on the north end to the Zs on the south.

Next, find the number (885) in the E section.  Then, look alphabetically from there until you find the I's (E885.I....), then the 900s, until you have located E885.I995.  If you would like to check the book out, take it to the desk in the lobby of the library.  Your Tiger ID Card is your Library Card.
